My best friend got his dreamcar … A Trabant !

Somewhere, in the basement or attic of my parents’ house, there must be an old box with “Photos / Laurent” written on it. In this box, there must tens of photo albums and thousands of pictures. One of them must be of my best friend Michael, in Budapest in the mid 90’s, proudly leaning on a beautiful Trabant.

He always dreamt of one day getting his hands on an original Trabant. This exceptional east-german car was produced from 1957 to 1991 without majors changes … It was a role model for modern speed cars: 2-stroke 2 cylinders 600cc engine delivering 25hp toping at 70mph. It was very resistant, with its doors, roof, bonnet and fenders made out of Duroplast (a resin made of wool and cotton) …. ! East-Berliners sometimes had to wait close to 10 years to get theirs. My grand-mother, who lived in West-Berlin at the time, told me tales about how difficult it was to get it (as well as a phone, a gas-cooker, …).

Well, Michael finally got his, as you can see below. An original Trabbi from 1979, in from of the Concorde and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
