I am not sure I understand Meraki’s approach to covering San Francisco with free wifi. Meraki’s strategy lies on users sharing their connection via free radio repeaters.
Basically, the plan to kill the ISPs, cable or dsl, lies on them. Of course, the primary goal is to offer wifi on the go, I guess.
However, when moving in a new house, and with the upcoming power of 802.11n (speed + range), why would I want to commit on an ISP provider if there are 10 wifi networks available around me for free ?
And if they are not (Fon gives you free access to any fon wifi spot if you share your own home wifi, and at-a-cost access if you don’t), it means users make money on the back of the ISPs, which I am sure they will love (and authorize …).
I know this is an intense debate, however I am not sure I understand how Meraki, or Fon, or any other comparable competitor, want to win the game on this current strategy.
