The US: a true democratic example ?

Tonight, we saw the 21st Democratic debate for the 2008 presidential elections. And tonight, we saw an African-American and a woman discuss the issues of the country.

We are in 2008. It’s just over 80 years that women can vote, since the 1920 19th Amendment. And even if the 15th amendment from 1870 allowed no distinction of race or color in the right to vote, it’s only 52 years since Rosa Parks refused to give her seat in the bus, and exactly 40 years since the Loving v. Virginia case, ending race-based legal restrictions on marriage.

The 19th Amendment of the United States constitution, passed in 1920:

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

Section 1 of the 15th Amendment, ratified in 1870:

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied
or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race,
color, or previous condition of servitude.”

I am more than excited by what’s happening right now, and have never been so hopeful about the future of the most powerful country in the world.
