Who really won Super-Tuesday ? The Super-Delegates.

Following yesterday’s post on the difference between super-delegates and pledged delegates and the fact that the number of delegates per State is not linear (proportional) from one state to another, I am analyzing the results of Super-Tuesday and discover some strange numbers. I will post as soon as the results of yesterday primaries are officials.

But for now, take a look at the to-date results of each Democratic candidate (from CNN, on Feb 6th, 12:01pm):

  • Hillary Clinton: 783 delegates consisting of 590 pledged delegates and 193 super-delegates.
  • Barack Obama: 709 delegates consisting of 603 pledged delegates and 106 Super-delegates.

So if we were to have the 2008 Denver Democratic Conventiontoday, Hillary would win. But it’s obvious above: Barack won more votes, i.e. pledged delegates, than Hillary.

Definition reminder - What are superdelegates ? Super-delegates are democratic officeholders and elected officials who can vote for the candidate of their choice and are guaranteed a seat at the Democratic Convention.

So less elected pledged delegates and more un-elected “free agent” superdelegates for Hillary, and she’s winning the race at this point.

Democratic Party they call it …

Update at 12:31pm: Updated results show Hillary with both more pledged delegates and superdelegates. Now (and until the next update ?) it makes more sense…

THE PEOPLE, NOT THE PARTY SHOULD DECIDE. This is so wrong, bordering corruption.

This is what it feels like for a foreigner like me … Parties have their own rules to decide who should run - and that’s fine (they are free to decide how they work).
However, this is really about who you know, who you supported (or were supported by) historically, and obviously who you made friend with …
