I just lost $10: I watched Vantage Point

Vantage Point - Movie posterI was really excited about this movie, found the idea really interesting, was a little doubtful about the cast (can Dennis Quaid be a good thriller movie actor ?) but thought action would make up for it.

But the movie didn’t live up to my expectations … actually far from that ! I didn’t trust the Rotten Tomatoes, and I should have.

! ! ! Watch out, spoiler indise ! ! !

Dennis overplays the role of the secret agent on the comeback, make strange faces, too much affliction, … Some scenes don’t make sense at all (like Forest Whitaker 20mn sprint looking through his video camera ….). The car chase is not as good as everyone says (try to do what Dennis does with an Opel Corsa !). And Sigourney Weaver plays for 47 second in total (don’t be mislead by the trailer). In all, it’s pretty disapointing for a film in that category and with that budget …

La Haine - Movie PosterHowever, the acting of the movie was saved, I think, thanks to Saïd Taghmaoui (not because he’s french, and not because there is the word “Tag” in his name) and Edgar Ramirez (that you also saw in the Bourne Ultimatum, and if you didn’t, go watch it now !).

Said made his debut in La Haine(french for “hate”), a masterpiece french movie by Mathieu Kassovitz (that you know from directing Ghotika, or his acting in Munich, The Fifth Elemend, …).

  1. 1 Miki

This is probably one of the reasons why I almost never go to the theater… Count 13-15 bucks here in Paris to go see a movie, 2 times out of 3 I am disappointed in what I’ve seen and the time I enjoy the movie I am just thinking that the experience would have been much better at home, because some annoying people were sitting around me. ;)
I really think that online video rental platforms are going to kill theaters, the same way iTunes killed CD sales.
    1. The equipment at home is getting “closer” to what theaters have (large image, good multi-channel sound, HD capabilities)
    2. Price: renting a very recent movie on iTunes in HD is around 5-6$, and the whole family can watch it. Taking your family to the cinema costs today 50$!!!!
    3. Release time from theater to rental is shrinking every 6 months and I am sure that very soon it’s going to be almost simultaneous.

Well and these are just some reasons, I could give another 10 ;)
