Yes I do agree with this article. For last couple of years India emerged as a Super power and at the verge of becoming a developed nation. This progress, no doubt, is commendable. The sudden boom in IT sector in India has given her an edge in this technical era. Now it is no more that poor nation people think of it.

I was recently told that "the best thing that could have happened to India was to be colonized by the British". As an Indian living abroad, I was livid to hear this and extremely offended by the comment. I was told that what the person meant was that because of the british presence, Indians speak English, which is why we are advancing so rapidly today. To me, this shows pure ignorance. Just because we speak English, does this make us any smarter? Do you think that we couldn't have gotten ahead without the British being in India? Yes, it may have taken us a little longer, but we would have made it happen. I don't understand how people forget what India went through to gain independance. I definitely wasn't around, but I have read and heard enough about it to know that nothing justifies being invaded by another country and for people to think that it was the best thing that could have happended - all in the name of the English language?
I could go on about why India would've been better off without the British, but I'd love to know your thoughts.

India before colonization was the richest country in the world... as reported by many foreigners.... these texts are easily available in numerous websites.... So like today Europe dont produce a major part of technical things like computers softwares etc...still it is well equiped with it. It has the buying power thanks to the money laundered from all its colonies.... I agree with prabat abt the size of India...Therefore if India was not colonized would have been Bharat or Hindustan or even United states of Hindustan and would definately have been better placed economically. Also this blog would have bee nwritten in Hindi or Sanskrit. As far as the social development is concerned sati caste system were going to be abolished one day or other.... the major work of irradication of those myths was done by noted Indian social workers.... not to mention theirs names there are plenty of them ....

But whether colonization was bad or not, it is past and you can seldom change it (unless you travel in time hehe...)the biggest question is what can we do to make up for the losses.......and to answer to Mr Ashok Chatterjee pissy---mistic comments ... thanks to people like you India is still poor ..........

Well, as they say "there is nothing absolute good or bad". To that extent I agree that British coloniesm did some good things for India. However I would want to debate the notion that had British not been there, India would not have seen ay of that development.
To assess that I can only think of comparing various colonies (British or otherwise). What appears a general trend is that the colonies usually lack in the development (barring a few exceptions e.g. Hong Kong). I guess no country would want to leg behind for a long period, unless restricted by an external force.
Secondly, in pockets India was already employing new technology (Tipu Sultan's rockets) as well as expanding its infrastructure. And going by history I would assume that rest of India would have caught up, though may be a bit late.
However, as India was fragmented when British came and left, so I am not sure if India would have been as large country as it is today or a bunch of smaller countries.
From that I conclude that the biggest benefit that British colonization had for India was to bring it together. Rest of the changes would have come sooner or later in any case.

Your assessment of India now or at colonial era are wrong, misleading and lack realistic perception. India does not have the potential of becoming a superpower in the short as well as long term. Its demographic, social and psychic structure is inherently fragmentative. That alone is reason enough that India, unlike China, will always remain a mediocre country, poor, weak andburdened with unimaginable explosion of over-population bursting at the seams. It is naive and foolish of those Indians and foreigners who attribute highfallutin qualities to this essentially very ordinary country. It has always muddled through and got by somehow, and shall always continue to do so.

Well I agree in some way... We can't say the same about French colonies in Africa! In some way the British did a "good" job.
